Getting a match you can trust
Tap the exact spot you care about. Put the marker on a flat, evenly lit part of the colour โ not a shadow, a highlight, or the edge where two surfaces meet. Drag it around and the reading updates live, so you can hunt for the steadiest patch.
Watch the close-up. The magnified square shows what's actually being measured. If it looks blotchy or straddles two colours, move the marker.
Shoot in indirect daylight. Near a window on an overcast day is close to ideal. Direct sun blows out the colour and lamps push it warm.
Turn the flash off. It flattens the surface and adds a colour cast of its own.
Fill the frame. Get close enough that the colour fills most of the picture, so surrounding objects don't bounce their own tint onto it.
Avoid shine. Angle away from glare โ a reflected highlight reads as a lighter colour than the paint really is.
Include a sheet of white paper in the shot if you can. It gives you a reference for whether the whole photo is running warm or cool.
An honest word about accuracy: no online tool gets this right every time, and this one is
no exception. Your camera guesses at white balance, your screen shifts colours again, and paint
changes appearance with sheen and lighting once it's on the wall. Treat the matches here as a
strong shortlist rather than a final answer โ take the code to a paint store, look at the physical
chip, and buy a sample pot before committing to a whole room.
How it works: when you tap the image, the colour is averaged over a small patch and
converted into LAB โ a colour space built to mirror how human eyes judge difference. Every paint
in the built-in library is compared in that space, so the ranking reflects what actually looks
closest rather than what's mathematically nearest in RGB. The library covers common shades from
Sherwin-Williams, Behr, Benjamin Moore and Valspar. Everything runs inside this page, which is
why it works with the internet switched off.
