How to get your export in the first place
Google. takeout.google.com. Pick Location History, My Activity and YouTube History at minimum. It can take days to arrive and runs to many gigabytes.
Facebook and Instagram. Accounts Centre, then Your information and permissions, then Download your information. Choose JSON rather than HTML, or this cannot read it.
TikTok. Settings, Account, Download your data. Choose JSON.
Amazon. Request My Data in account settings. Order history and Alexa voice recordings are separate requests.
Spotify. Account, Privacy settings, Download your data. Extended streaming history is a separate, slower request and is the interesting one.
Everyone in the UK, EU, California and a growing list of other places has a legal right to this, and companies have to answer. There is no cost and no reason needed.
How it works: a data export is a zip full of undocumented files, which is the reason the right to ask for one so rarely turns into anyone actually reading it. This opens the zip in the page, works out which company sent it, and pulls out the parts that say something: the list of interests advertisers have decided you have, the companies who uploaded your details to find you, the sites that reported your activity back, every location recorded and when, everything watched and searched for. Nothing is uploaded, including the file itself, which matters more here than anywhere else on this site — a data export is the single most revealing file you will ever hold, and the services that offer to read one for you are asking you to hand it over. Every file in the archive is listed, including the ones this cannot interpret, so nothing is quietly skipped.
