First run downloads the engine. About thirty megabytes of it, once, then your browser keeps it. After that everything is instant and works offline. A long video will make a laptop fan spin — that is your own processor doing the work instead of somebody's server.
How it works: this runs a full build of FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly, right inside the tab. That is the same engine behind almost every conversion site on the web, except those upload your file, put you in a queue, cap you at a few hundred megabytes and want an email address. Here the file is never sent anywhere, there is no size limit beyond what your own memory can hold, and there is nothing to sign up for. The tradeoff is honest: your machine does the encoding, so a two-hour video takes real time and real battery. Pulling audio out of a video is the fast case, since it usually just copies the existing track rather than re-encoding it.
